Adam was our representative. God commanded Him, "You can eat from any tree in the garden except that one."

In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (spiritually). Gen 2:17

Adam disobeyed and ate. That sin separated all of mankind from God. Because of this we were all born sinners alienated from God.

By the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation. I was shapen (born) in iniquity... in sin did my mother conceive me.  Rom 5:18 Ps 51:5

By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified (guiltless) …For all have sinned. The just (righteous) shall live by faith. Rom 3:20-23 Gal 3:11

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. (God) will by no means clear the guilty. 1 Sam 15:23 Exod 34:7

Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. Whatsoever is not of faith is sin. James 2:10 Rom 14:23

Under the old covenant (B.C.); God gave mankind a way to temporarily cover sin. This symbolized the coming perfect sacrifice, Jesus.

Without shedding of blood is no remission (forgiveness). Your lamb shall be without blemish (symbolic of sinless). Heb 9:22 Exod 12:5

Commentary - Slide 1

We were all born sinners. Apart from salvation we are all condemned (damned, eternally separated from God). Adam was our representative and he chose to sin. We do not have to choose hell to end up there. By default (without choosing either God or Satan) we were born headed away from God. Which means we are born headed for hell.

Loving your neighbors and obeying the Ten Commandments (the law) will not bring you one step closer to salvation. The law showed us what sin was. The law also showed us we couldn’t live up to God’s standard. That forced us to look to Christ for redemption. (Gal 3:24) “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster (truant officer) to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified (guiltless) by faith.”

Commentary - Slide 3

If we keep all the laws of God and break only one the penalty is still eternal separation from God. This next verse really sheds some light on what God sees as sin. (Rom 14:23) “…for whatsoever (anything that) is not of faith is sin.” A good deed that is not based and executed in faith is still sin!

If righteousness could have been achieved by keeping a law God would have given us one. (Gal 3:21) “…For if there had been a law given which could have given life (eternal life), verily righteousness should have been by the law.” There is not a law, nor can there be a law, that we can keep to attain righteousness. That is how depraved mankind is.
